World-Class Neurosurgery
in The Bronx, NY
The history of Neurosurgery at St Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx goes back to 70 years ago when Dr. Irving Cooper, a world-renowned pioneer in Functional Neurosurgery, established a thriving Neurosurgery Department, which he oversaw from the 1950's through the 1970's. In fact, St Barnabas Hospital itself was founded in 1866, over 150 years ago, and has since been a major healthcare provider to the Bronx community.
Although the last few decades had seen a relative decline in the neurosurgical program at SBH, a strong revival has taken place over the last decade with the recruitment of Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh, an internationally renowned urologist and Cornell University Professor, as Chairman of the Department of Surgery. In 2018, Dr. Shabsigh recruited Dr. Ralph Rahme, an experienced and highly trained academic neurosurgeon, to lead the Division of Neurosurgery.
Thanks to their shared vision of building a clinically rich and academically robust neurosurgical program, the Division of Neurosurgery has experienced record levels of growth over the past 6 years, with the recruitment of additional faculty and staff, the establishment of a fellowship program, and a prolific scholarly activity, earning the Division respect on the national and international stage. However, notwithstanding this early success, the best is yet to come.
